No. 8 Carolina Opens With Two Wins

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 8 North Carolina opened its season in impressive fashion Saturday with a pair of 7-0 wins over East Carolina and Elon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels did not drop a set in 12 singles matches and lost just six games in six doubles matches.
Carolina (2-0) easily captured the doubles point in the opener against East Carolina (0-1). Seniors Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen, the No. 16 doubles tandem in the country, defeated Brooke Walter and Varinia Soler at No. 1, 8-1. Senior Caitlin Collins and freshman Sanaz Marand, currently ranked No. 24 in the nation, also scored an 8-2 win over Alex Smith and Luiza Borges. At No. 3 doubles, sophomores Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy did not drop a game in an 8-0 win over Hannah Priest and Presley Thomas.
The Tar Heels cruised in singles play as well, losing just five games in six matches. Long, the No. 7 sinlges player in the nation, Anundsen and No. 73-ranked Marand each scored 6-0, 6-0 victories. No. 19 Tsang, No. 33 Smith and Collins also scored singles wins.
UNC was just as impressive against Elon (1-1) in the nightcap. Smith and Fanjoy moved up to No. 1 doubles and scored an 8-1 win over Deanna Bailey and Jennifer Tucci. Tsang and Laura Reichert swept past Paige Kensrue and Hayley Wahl 8-0, while Alexandra Jurewitz and Sophie Grabinski defeated Frances Rudolph and Laura Graybill 8-1.
Long at No. 1 and Marand at No. 4 were again perfect in singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Tsang was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles over Tucci, Anundsen dropped Kensrue 6-2, 6-1, Reichert defeated Rudolph 6-1, 6-1, and Fanjoy topped Graybill 6-0, 6-2.
The Tar Heels will face a short turnaround, as they face Winthrop and Charlotte on Monday. The first match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center is set for 10 a.m., with the second match set for 4 p.m.
