CARY, N.C. - Carolina earned the doubles point to set the score 1-0, but dropped four singles matches to fall to No. 17 Clemson in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Friday. No. 7 North Carolina, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, now stands at 24-6, while Clemson moves to 16-6 for the overall season.
For the 28th time this season, Carolina jumped off to a 1-0 start winning the doubles point. The Tar Heels saw doubles wins from the one and three seeds. Ranked fifth in the nation, the junior Tar Heel tandem of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long gained their 33rd doubles win of the season. They faced off at the one seed over Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem, a duo ranked 12th in the latest ITA polls. Anundsen and Long downed Salge and Federica, 8-5. Competing at the three seed, the freshmen duo of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith took on Marie Scriba and Maria Brito. Fanjoy and Smith improved their record to 29-9 with an 8-2 win over the Clemson pair. The Tar Heel tandem has won the last four matches straight.
Carolina suffered in singles action, dropping the first four. At the two seed, No. 64 Caitlin Collins fell to Daniela Alvarez in straight sets, pushing the match to a one-all tie. Senior Tanja Markovic and sophomore Charlotte Tansill competed at the five and six seeds, respectively, each falling in straight sets to Alexandra Luc and Kathy Gerber. Clemson's 61st-ranked Carol Salge clinched the match at the one seed over Carolina's 34th-ranked Jenna Long. Long dropped the first set, but battled back to win the second. Taking the match into a third set, Long got off to a rough start, falling to a 4-1 deficit before battling back to 5-3. Salge won the sixth point in a deuce battle between the two.
"I'm just proud of our team," said head coach Brian Kalbas. "As we did all year long, we gave it everything we had. We just came up a little short. Clemson is a very good team; they play very hard and are extremely talented. We just came in and fought hard, but unfortunately it didn't come out our way."
Clemson upset the Tar Heels for the second time this season. In regular season action on April 9, the Tigers defeated Carolina 4-3. The Tar Heels have a short break before heading into the NCAA Regionals, which are to be held May 13-15 at campus sites.
