No. 10 Tar Heels Fall To No. 1 Stanford In USTA/ITA National Indoors Quarterfinals

MADISON, WIS. - In the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, the Tar Heels fell to No. 1 Stanford in its first loss of the season. The Tar Heels will now face Texas Christian University in a consolation match at 3 p.m. on Saturday, while the Cardinals grabbed its 60th consecutive match at the National Indoors with its win today. North Carolina is now 6-1 on the season and Stanford is 4-0.
Both North Carolina and Stanford had strong wins in the first round on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. Carolina defeated No. 22 BYU 6-1, while Stanford downed No. 12 Kentucky 7-0. Stanford will now face Harvard in the semifinals on Saturday.
Stanford grabbed the doubles point after winning all three matches. The nation's 11th ranked tandem of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long fought competitively against the 2nd ranked duo in the nation, Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey, but fell 8-6. Anundsen and Long now stand at 15-8 on the season. The two duos met previously in the finals of the ITA National Individual Indoor Championships back in October, where Barnes and Yelsey came out on top 8-5.
At the No. 1 seed in singles action, Jenna Long, ranked No. 28, took the match into the third set against Amber Lui. Long fell to Lui 4-6, 6-2, 6-3; her record now stands at 14-4. The No. 4 and No. 46 singles players in the country competed against each other at the second seed with Stanford's Alice Barnes beating North Carolina's Caitlin Collins.
Stanford has two tandems ranked in ITA polls with Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey sitting at the No. 2 spot and Stanford has three players ranked in singles in the top ten of the nation.
North Carolina is now 7-7 in competition at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. The Tar Heels will face BYU on Saturday at 3 p.m. (CST) at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
