MADISON, WIS. - In the quarterfinal play-offs of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the No. 10 Tar Heels topped No. 16 Texas Christian University 6-1. North Carolina finishes the tournament 2-1 and TCU made its first appearance in the tournament. The Tar Heels improved its record to 7-1, while TCU is now 2-2.
Clinching the doubles point for the Tar Heels were Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic, defeating Ionesco and Cetnik 9-7. Ranked 50th in the nation, Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith defeated Morgado and Lopez, 8-4. Dropping only their second loss of the season, Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, ranked 11th in ITA polls, fell to No. 40 Besovic and Sydorska, 8-3.
In singles action, the Tar Heels saw wins from Jenna Long, Sara Anundsen, Austin Smith, Tanja Markovic and Charlotte Tansill. Long, ranked 28th, upset TCU's No. 22 ranked Helena Besovic, defeating her 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. With the win, Long also clinched the match for the Tar Heels.
Both Anundsen and Markovic battled hard against their opponents, coming out on top of Ana Cetnik and Kewa Nichols, respectively; Anundsen upset Cetnik, who is ranked No. 43 in the nation. Cruising past their opponents were Smith and Tansill, who defeated Karine Ionesco and Andrea Morgado, respectively. Long and Smith both went 3-0 in singles action this week.
In head coach Brian Kalbas' reign, this appearance marks the first time Carolina has won two matches after winning in the first round and advancing to the quarterfinals. Last year, the Tar Heels defeated Tulane in the first round, lost to Kentucky in the quarterfinals and fell to Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals play-offs.
Coach Kalbas was extremely proud of the team's performance in this highly prestigious tournament.
"It was the first time Carolina has won two matches after getting to quarters in first round," said Kalbas. "The team competed hard and we played a very talented team. Jenna, Sara and Tanja were the last three matches to compete today and they all won in three sets, which show the team's great competitiveness. And to win two matches against two of the best teams in country is outstanding."
The Tar Heels improve its record to 8-7 in five USTA/ITA appearances. Back in action on Sunday, February 12, the Tar Heels will host Notre Dame at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
