
No. 11 Tar Heels Sweep Minnesota 7-0

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Competing in the Minnesota Court Classic, the No. 11-ranked Tar Heels swept the Minnesota Golden Gophers 7-0 on Friday. North Carolina is now 4-0 for the 2006 season, while Minnesota started its play today, opening 0-1.
Carolina swept the singles matches with Meg Fanjoy, Tanja Markovic, Jenna Long, Charlotte Tansill, Austin Smith and Caitlin Collins all coming out with wins. Seeded first and ranked 46th nationally, junior Collins improved her season record to 11-5 after downing Nischela Reddy, who is ranked No. 87 nationally, 6-1, 6-3. Ranked No. 28, junior Long defeated Minnesota's Ida Malmburg 6-2, 6-1; her season record now stands at 12-3.
In doubles action, the No. 50-ranked duo of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith beat Marina Bugaenco and Mariana Spilca 8-5, improving their record to 12-4 for the season.
"I have a lot of respect for their coach," says head coach Brian Kalbas. "He was a former assistant of mine. Minnesota fought hard and they played a great match. We played well in singles and never gave up."
The Tar Heels will face Oklahoma Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in the Minnesota Court Classic.
