No. 11 Tar Heels Defeat No. 62 Oklahoma 7-0 At Minnesota Court Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Finishing up competition at the Minnesota Court Classic on Saturday, the No. 11-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team defeated No. 62-ranked Oklahoma 7-0 to improve its season record to 5-0, while Oklahoma opened its season 0-1.
"It was a team effort, everyone came ready to play," says head coach Brian Kalbas. "It gave us a lot of encouragement having these two decisive wins for our club."
The Tar Heels won the doubles point after winning two out of three matches. The tandem of Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic and the freshmen pair of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith each came out victorious against Oklahoma duos. Collins and Markovic defeated Chelsea Orr and Monica Purice 8-6, while the No. 50-ranked Fanjoy and Smith defeated Anne Carter and Christi Baxley 8-4, respectively.
Ranked 11th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the junior duo of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long lost their first match of the 2006 season, falling to Gabby Baker and Irina Lykina 8-5. Their season record is now 14-7.
The Tar Heels swept Oklahoma in singles play, winning six out of six matches. Singles action was led by number one seeded and 28th-ranked Jenna Long, who battled against Oklahoma's No. 73-ranked Gabby Baker, coming out on top 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Long improves her season record to 13-3. Ranked 46th in ITA polls, Collins beat Irina Lykina in a tie-breaker, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7); her season record now stands at 12-5.
Other Tar Heels with singles victories were Sara Anundsen, Austin Smith, Tanja Markovic, Charlotte Tansill and Meg Fanjoy; all cruising to victories against their opponents.
North Carolina will continue play at the ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wis., Feb 3-6. It will be the Tar Heels' fifth appearance in the tournament. North Carolina has advanced to the quarterfinals in three appearances, 2002, 2003 and 2005.
