CORAL GABLES, FLA. - Junior striker Elizabeth Guess scored two goals and had one assist for No. 1-ranked North Carolina as the Tar Heel women's soccer team needed a burst of offense in the second half to overcome Atlantic Coast Conference rival Miami 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium. Senior midfielder Lori Chalupny tallied the game-winning goal for UNC and junior forward Heather O'Reilly added the other goal for North Carolina.
It was only the second series meeting between the two teams and the first in Coral Gables. Miami's defense successfully held off the Tar Heels until Chalupny's goal in the 53rd minute jump started the UNC scoring run, Carolina improved to 10-0 overall on the season and the Tar Heels now stand 2-0 in ACC matches. Miami suffered its second home loss in a row and the Hurricanes are now 5-5-1 overall and 0-2 in their second year in the ACC.
There was a crowd of 767 on hand at Cobb Stadium, the second highest attendance total in Miami women's soccer history.
The Tar Heels outshot Miami 36-5 but found putting the ball away far more difficult than they did last Thursday when UNC scored the same number of goals on only 13 shots in a 4-1 win at No. 7 Florida State. The 36 shots were the most ever taken in a match by a Miami opponent.
Senior goalkeeper Aly Winget, from Orinda, Calif., faced five shots and made one save in the match. Winget now has 198 career saves, a Tar Heel record, and the match marked her 32nd career solo shutout, just two short of the ACC record in that statistic.
The UNC scoring began at 52:38 off the boot of Lori Chalupny, from St. Louis, Mo. After Elizabeth Guess, who hails from Athens, Ga., had flicked a ball on to Chalupny at the bottom of the left corner of the penalty area, the midfielder found the back of the net from 18 yards away. Chalupny went to the far right post, looping a ball over Miami goalkeeper Lauren McAdam, who made 13 saves in a yeoman effort for the Hurricanes. The goal was Chalupny's fifth of the campaign and her second game-winner.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to 2-0 less than seven minutes later at 59:04. It was Guess who scored this time, notching her fifth goal of the season. Guess had and initial shot on the play and she pounced on the rebound and fired the ball into the goal from point blank range.
UNC would make the score 3-0 at 73:40 as leading scorer Heather O'Reilly netted her 10th goal of the season. Sophomore forward Jaime Gilbert had the assist on the play. Gilbert set up the goal perfectly as she carried the ball deep into the left corner near the stick. Gilbert sent a hard cross to the middle of the box where O'Reilly trapped the ball, turned around past the defender on her and toe poked the ball past the keeper into the right side from six yards.
O'Reilly moved into a tie for 18th place in career goal scoring at UNC with Shannon Higgins (1986-89) with her 39th career tally.
The last goal came at 84:12 when Guess and senior forward Lindsay Tarpley teamed up on a give-and-go as both made a run through the Miami defense. With McAdam coming out of her goal to snuff the play, Tarpley fed Guess in the box on the right side and Guess fired a shot into the left corner for the final margin.
The Tar Heels will be idle until Friday when they they host Clemson at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. It will be UNC's first home match in 26 days. UNC has a second match next weekend, playing at Maryland on Sunday at 2 p.m. Miami plays at Virginia Tech Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Virginia Sunday at 1 p.m.
