CARY, N.C. - The 13th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team came out strong but fell to a persistent Georgia Tech team 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals Saturday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Center. Carolina, the tournament's fourth seed, won the doubles point, but could only take one of the singles matches from the Yellow Jackets, the one seed in the tournament. Carolina moves to 20-9 overall. Georgia Tech improves to 18-3 and advances to Sunday's ACC Championship match at 11 a.m.. The Yellow Jackets will face the winner of the Clemson/Miami, the other semifinal of the day.
"I'm really proud of how we played today," said Head Coach Brian Kalbas. "We had a lot of chances, and we played very determined. But you've got to give Georgia Tech a lot of credit. They wouldn't give an inch today."
Meeting the Yellow Jackets for the second time in the past week, Carolina dominated in doubles, winning first at No. 2 and clinching the doubles point at No. 3. The sophomore tandem of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, ranked 34th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls, rolled at No. 2, defeating Dasha Potapova and Lyndsay Shosho 8-2. Anundsen and Long fell 8-6 to the same Georgia Tech team on April 17, when the teams met in Atlanta, Ga.
Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic improved to 5-3 with their 8-6 win over Kelly Anderson and Whitney McCray at No. 3. The win sent the Tar Heels heading into singles play with a 1-0 lead.
Georgia Tech battled back and tied the match at 1-1 after the nation's 19th-ranked Kristi Miller defeated No. 32 Aniela Mojzis 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Carolina then went up 2-1 after UNC senior Kendall Cline, ranked 25th, came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Potapova at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Long fought hard and took the first set to a tie break. But Georgia Tech's Anderson won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, evening the match at 2-2.
The Yellow Jackets' Alison Silverio moved her team to 3-2 in the match after she defeated Anundsen at No. 4 6-2, 6-2. Georgia Tech's Shosho clinched the match after she beat Collins at No. 5 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Tar Heels will now wait to see what bid they will receive for the NCAA Tournament. The first two rounds of regionals run May 13-15. The championships continue in Athens, Ga., May 19-28.
"We've had a great season; we've won 20 matches," said Kalbas. "We've had one of the toughest schedules, and our losses this year have been to strong teams. For our team to not have had a bad loss says a lot. Considering that, I think we should be granted one of the regional host sites for the NCAA Tournament."
