CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 16th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis defeated the 32nd-ranked Seminoles of Florida State Saturday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the win, Carolina avenged a 4-3 loss to Florida State in Tallahassee last year.
Coming off a 4-3 win at Wake Forest on March 31, the Tar Heels are now 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and 14-6 overall. The Seminoles move to 9-7, 4-3 in the ACC, and will play at Duke on Sunday.
Carolina swept all three doubles matches, which it hasn't done since Feb. 26, when it defeated East Carolina 7-0 at home. The fifth-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis defeated a strong 10th-ranked Lindsay Deason and Mihaela Moldovan 8-6 at the No. 1 seed. With its third straight win, the senior duo moves to 24-5.
At the No. 2 doubles seed, 26th-ranked Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long moved to 25-6 as they cruised past the Seminoles' Roxanne Clarke and Amberly Tantee 8-2. The pair is 14-3 in dual-match play. At No. 3, Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic won their second straight match together, defeating Miranda Foley and Tapiwa Marobela 8-5.
In singles action, UNC took five of the six matches. At the No. 2 seed, Cline, ranked 20th in the ITA rankings, defeated Clarke 6-1, 6-4, and is one win away from 30 singles victories this season.
Carolina also won at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 seeds. Long clinched the match with her win at the No. 3 seed. The Fremont, Calif., sophomore, who has won her last five matches, is 17-3 in dual-match play and 28-5 overall this season.
Carolina will play Elon this evening at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in a rescheduled match. UNC then travels to face ACC foe N.C. State on Wednesday, April 6, at 2:30 p.m.
