CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In one of its most convincing home victories, the 13th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team dominated third-ranked Kentucky 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels (7-2) avenged its 5-2 loss to the Wildcats (6-3) on Feb. 4, when the squads met in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
"We were very composed today," said Head Coach Brian Kalbas after the win. "Last week when we played Kentucky, we were the team that was getting frustrated. But I told the team that it's all about improving. We turned last week into movitation, and today, everybody did it for us."
The Tar Heels, who are now a perfect 6-0 at home, dominated from the start as they won all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 seed, the 14th-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis beat the 11th-ranked pair of Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk 8-3. The senior pair moves to 6-1 in dual match play and 16-2 on the season.
In singles play, sophomore Caitlin Collins, freshman Charlotte Tansill and Cline all came back after dropping the first set to win their respective matches.
"The way they played is indicative of our team's attitude today," said Kalbas. "They lost the first match, but they stayed in it and were extremely positive."
Ranked 37th in the nation, Cline cruised past 58th-ranked Coventry in the last two sets to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 seed. Cline is now 21-3 and has dropped only one match in dual play this season.
Collins beat the Wildcat's Danielle Petrisko 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 5 seed. Tansill fought hard in the end to take a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8) victory over Christine Simpson.
Mojzis, ranked 26th in the nation, defeated 30th-ranked Sarah Foster at the No. 1 seed 6-4.
The win marks Kalbas' 16th win over a top-10 team in his coaching career.
The Tar Heels are back in action at home on Wednesday, Feb. 16, against Virginia Tech. The match begins at 3:30 p.m. at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
