
No. 9 Tar Heels Beat Hokies 7-0 For Second Sweep In A Row

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Carolina women's tennis team blanked Virginia Tech 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center for its third sweep of the season. The win was also Carolina's second straight sweep having beaten Kentucky 7-0 on Saturday. UNC improves to 7-0 at home and 8-2 overall.
In the first meeting between the squads as Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, UNC dominated from the start, losing only five games in all three doubles matches. The Tar Heels are now 9-1 in winning the doubles point.
The 14th-ranked tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis defeated Anat Elazari and Jessica Long 8-1 to move their overall record to 17-2.
With their 8-1 win at the No. 2 seed, sophomores Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long improve to 9-1 in dual-match play. The victory also marks the pair's 20th win this season.
At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Caitlin Collins and freshman Alexandra Jurewitz got their second straight win together, beating the Hokies' Bethan James and Meredith Holmes 8-3.
In singles play, all Tar Heels came away with convincing straight set wins.
Cline, ranked 37th, played for the first time this season at the No. 1 seed, where she took a 7-5, 6-2 win over Elazari. Cline is 8-1 in dual-match play and 22-3 on the season.
Mojzis, ranked 26th, Long, Collins, Anundsen and Jurewitz all added a point for UNC with their respective singles wins. Long's victory marked her 20th singles win of the season.
Carolina, who moved up from No. 13 to No. 9 in the ITA rankings released Tuesday, take the road for its next two contests. The Tar Heels head to Evanston, Ill., to face a tough fourth-ranked Northwestern on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. UNC then plays at Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m.
