COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Overcoming a record performance by Maryland goalkeeper Nikki Resnick, the No. 1-rated University of North Carolina women's soccer team remained undefeated and untied this season by beating Maryland 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Tar Heels improved to 12-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference heading into Thursday's match against defending ACC Tournament champion Virginia, also 4-0 in the league at this time, at Fetzer Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
Sunday's match was in sharp contrast to the two matches the team's played last year when North Carolina twice had to score in double overtime to put away the Terps. UNC had a pronounced shot margin in Sunday's match, 34-6, but the Tar Heels did find it difficult to get the ball past Resnick until the second half. The Maryland goalie finished with 14 saves, setting the Ludwig Field record for saves in a match by an individual goalkeeper.
North Carolina (No. 1 in the NSCAA, Soccer Buzz, Soccer America and Soccer Times polls) got goals Sunday from Lori Chalupny, Heather O'Reilly and Mandy Moraca as well as an own goal. The Tar Heels have now outscored their opponents this season 51-4, including 17-2 in ACC matches. The Tar Heels continued their pattern of being a second half team, scoring three times in the final 45 minutes Sunday. Thirty-two of UNC's 51 goals this season have been scored in the second half of games.
The loss for Maryland was the first for the Terps this year in the ACC. Maryland is now 3-6-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the ACC. The Terps were coming off a 1-0 upset win over Wake Forest (No. 11 NSCAA, No. 12 Soccer Buzz, No. 17 Soccer America) on Friday at Ludwig Field.
A year ago, UNC had no such cushion against the Terps as they ended up with Sunday. Carolina beat Maryland 2-1 in double overtime on September 24, 2004 in the regular season with Kacey White scoring a goal on a penalty kick in the second overtime. Carolina beat the Terps 1-0 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on a Heather O'Reilly goal in the second overtime.
UNC senior goalkeeper Aly Winget went all the way in the goal for the Tar Heels and made one save. The game gave Winget six solo shutouts this season. She has 33 now in her career, a number just one short of the ACC records shared by Duke's Melissa Carr and Clemson's Katie Carson.
Both Heather O'Reilly and Mandy Moraca had milestone goals on Sunday. O'Reilly, UNC's leading scorer with 30 points, scored her 11th goal of 2005 and her 40th career goal. She is now tied for 17th place in all-time goal scoring at UNC with Rakel Karvelsson (1995-98). O'Reilly now has 110 career points and is tied with Emily Pickering (1981-84) for 19th place in UNC history.
O'Reilly's fellow New Jersey native, Mandy Moraca, scored at 78:04 of the match, in the process tallying her first collegiate goal. Moraca had an assist in the win over San Diego earlier this season for her first career assist.
North Carolina went ahead in Sunday's match 1-0 at the 16:39 mark on an own goal. Lori Chalupny crossed the ball into the penalty area from the right side that was played into the top upper right of the net by Maryland midfielder Ashly Kennedy.
The Tar Heels settled for the 1-0 lead at halftime before shooting early and often at Resnick in the second half, breaking the game open. Less than four minutes into the second half, UNC increased its lead to 2-0 on Lori Chalupny's seventh goal of the season. Kacey White sent a corner kick into the box and Chalupny then put the ball into the back of the net with a shot through traffic at 48:11. White recorded her 12th assist of the season, a team-leading total. White now has 45 assists in her career and she is tied with Jena Kluegel (1998-2001) for 13th place in UNC history in that statistic.
Carolina scored twice more before the match was over. O'Reilly sent a shot from the left side that caromed off Resnick into the goal at 69:21 to make it 3-0 and Moraca finished the scoring at 78:04 by chipping the ball over Resnick into the goal. Brynn Hardman and Lori Chalupny assisted on the goal by Moraca.
Carolina's status as an undefeated and untied team will be challenged this week with two tough games at Fetzer Field. UNC hosts Virginia (No. 7 in NSCAA, Soccer America and Soccer Buzz polls) Thursday at 7 p.m. and Duke (No.9 NSCAA, No. 8 Soccer America, No. 9 Soccer Buzz) Sunday at 2 p.m.
