NEWTON, MASS. - After finding it difficult to finish its offensive chances in the previous two matches, the No. 3 University of North Carolina women's soccer team exploded for four second half goals to overcome Atlantic Coast Conference rival Boston College at the Newton Campus Soccer Field before a crowd of 2,200. Kacey White, Lori Chalupny, Heather O'Reilly and Lindsay Tarpley scored the goals for Carolina which improved to 14-1 overall and 6-1 in the ACC.
UNC bounced back from a loss to Duke at Fetzer Field last Sunday, Carolina's first loss in the ACC regular season since 2002 and it first ACC loss at home since 1994. Boston College, which came into the match ranked No. 10 by the NSCAA, No. 11 by Soccer Times and No. 14 by Soccer America and Soccer Buzz, saw its record fall to 3-3 in its first year in the ACC. The Eagles are now 9-3-1 overall.
The game turned on an outburst of Carolina goals that started in the 68th minute of the match. UNC ran off three goals in 12:10 to break a 1-1 tie and turn the game into a three-goal victory.
After a scoreless first half in which UNC outshot the Eagles 9-3, Carolina eventually broke through in the 50th minute of the game. After Heather O'Reilly was taken down in the box, senior midfielder Kacey White converted the ensuing penalty kick to put the Tar Heels up 1-0 at 49:09. The goal was White's fifth of the year and it marked the fifth straight penalty kick White has converted over the past two seasons.
BC did not back down and the Eagles tied the match at 61:28. Boston College's Caroline Walden pounced on a loose ball in the Tar Heel penalty area and tapped it to Molly Dane in front of the net and Dane finished the opportunity for her third goal of the season.
Carolina then inserted freshman Anna Rodenbough in the goal in place of starter Aly Winget at the 65:45 mark. Rodenbough was tested right after she was put in the game as she made a pair of saves as the ball ping ponged amongst players in the Tar Heel penalty area.
It was just moments later that Carolina seized the lead. The winning goal came at the 67:22 mark off the foot of senior midfielder Lori Chalupny, her eighth goal of the season and her team-leading fourth game-winning goal. Senior forward Lindsey Tarpley made a run up the middle of the field before sliding a pass behind the Boston College defensive line where Chalupny gathered it in and tapped it past onrushing Eagle goalkeeper Arianna Criscione, who had seven saves on the night.
Just over eight minutes later, UNC scored a similar goal with Tarpley sending a through ball to Heather O'Reilly, allowing the junior forward to finish from the left side of the box past Criscione, who had come out to try to snuff out the play. O'Reilly then sent the ball inside the right goal post to notch her team-leading 13th goal of the year.
Less than four minutes later, UNC finished the scoring with a goal by Tarpley, her fifth of the season, off an assist by North Andover, Mass., native Jaime Gilbert, playing her first game as a Tar Heel in her home state. Gilbert had possession on the left side of the box and sent it to an unmarked Tarpley who finished in front.
Rodenbough played the last 24:15 of the match and was credited with her first career UNC victory. She made three saves during her stint in the match.
With her two assists, Lindsay Tarpley moved into tie for the No. 5 spot in UNC history in all-time assists with 53, matching the total from Cindy Parlow (1995-98). Tarpley also increased her career point total to 151, moving her past Meredith Florance into the No. 11 spot all-time in all-time points. Heather O'Reilly garnered her 42nd career goal, tying her with Wendy Gebauer (1985-88) for the No. 16 spot in UNC history. O'Reilly now has 114 career points and she moved past Rakel Karvelsson (1995-98) and Anne Remy (1998-2001) into 15th place on the all-time list. Lori Chalupny moved into a tie for 30th place in career goals with her 28th tally, joining Julie Guarnotta (1985-88).
Carolina will return to action Sunday when the Tar Heels play Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. at 1 p.m. Boston College travels to NC State Sunday afternoon.
