DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Junior Rachel Dawson scored a career-high four goals to lead No. 4 North Carolina to a 7-0 field hockey win on Tuesday afternoon at Davidson. The Tar Heels improved to 11-2 on the season, while Davidson fell to 3-8.
Dawson, a midfielder/back from Berlin, N.J., doubled her season total with Tuesday's game and now leads the Tar Heels with eight goals on the year. She scored her first goal and UNC's only one of the first half 16 minutes into the game when she gathered the rebound after a save and shot the ball past Davidson goalkeeper Rachel Kiselewich.
After a first half in which each team had two penalty corners and UNC had eight shots to Davidson's two, the Tar Heels exploded in the second half. UNC had 15 shot after halftime and six of them found the goal. Dawson started the second-half scoring in the 43rd minute of play with a field goal assisted by freshman Britt van Beek. Less than three minutes later, van Beek scored a goal of her own, her fourth of the season, on an assist from senior Naomi Weatherald.
With 16 minutes remaining in the game, UNC was awarded its first penalty stroke of the season and Dawson put it in for her third goal of the afternoon to make the score 4-0. In the 56th minute of play, Weatherald scored on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Ashley Judge and sophomore Heather Kendell. With less than five minutes remaining, Dawson scored her fourth goal, assisted by sophomore Xan Funk. Two minutes later, redshirt freshman Leslie Barrows made the score 7-0 with her first career goal, assisted by Kendell.
The shutout was UNC's ninth of the season. Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran made three saves in 45 minutes of play and sophomore Marie Bounds finished out the final 25 minutes.
Carolina's next action is Friday afternoon, when the Tar Heels host top-ranked Wake Forest for a 4 p.m. game at Francis E. Henry Stadium. In the teams' first meeting, which was this year's designated Atlantic Coast Conference matchup, the Demon Deacons won 2-0 in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Oct. 1.
