Vanderbilt Defeats Carolina, 12-8

CHAPEL HILL - Kate Hickman and Lauren Peck each scored four goals as the Vanderbilt women's lacrosse team defeated North Carolina, 12-8, on Friday evening at Henry Stadium. Lindsay Higgins led C arolina with two goals.
With the win, the Commodores improve to 6-3 this season. Carolina falls to 7-5 with the defeat. Vanderbilt had never beaten Carolina prior to Friday evening, with the Tar Heels winning all eight meetings in the annual series that dates to the founding of both varsity programs in 1996.
The game marked the final regular season home game at Henry Stadium for five Tar Heel seniors -- Beth Ames, Katelyn Hoffman, Meghan Kelly, Rachel Szakmary and Brooke Young. Carolina will host the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on April 23 and 25.
In the first half, Lindsay Higgins scored on a free position goal 1:14 into the game for a 1-0 UNC lead. The Commmodores responded by scoring five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 lead, forcing a time out by Tar Heel head coach Jenny Levy. Carolina bounced back to pull within 6-5 at halftime behind goals by Ames, Szakmary and Allison Higgins.
In the second half, the Commodores came out strong and scored the first five goals of the second stanza to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Carolina scored three in a row to cut it to 11-8, but it was too late to change the outcome of the contest.
Vanderbilt collected 19 ground balls to Carolina's nine in the game.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Old Dominion.
