
No. 5 UNC Women's Tennis Drops Close Match To No. 11 USC 4-3

LOS ANGELES - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill women's tennis team lost to Southern California 4-3 on Tuesday at the Marks Tennis Stadium. USC (8-3, 2-0 Pac-10) took two out of three doubles matches for the point against the Tar Heels (12-2, 0-0 ACC). The two teams split the singles matches 3-3.
In doubles play, the No. 1 seed match went to a tiebreak. Luana Magnani and Carine Vermeulen of USC, ranked 14th nationally, beat Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline of UNC, ranked 29th, 9-8(5). This breaks the six-match win streak for Mojzis and Cline and puts them at 8-3 in dual match play.
Carolina senior Kendrick Bunn and freshman Caitlin Collins won the No. 2 seed match over Anca Anastasiu and Dianne Matias 8-4. The two, who recently began playing together, are undefeated so far at 5-0 in dual match play.
To pick up the doubles point, USC's Judy DeVera and Melissa Esmero won the No. 3 seed match over UNC's freshman pair of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long 8-2.
In singles play, UNC senior Lee Bairos fought hard for a three-set victory at the second seed over #89 Vermeulen 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. The third set was shortened to a 10-point tiebreak after USC clinched the win. Bairos improves to 8-6 in dual match play.
At the fifth seed, Anundsen also got a three-set win with a shortened third set over DeVera 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Anundsen moves on to 13-1 in dual match play.
unn got the Tar Heels' third singles win at the No. 6 seed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bernadette Bayani of USC. Bunn is now 7-0 in dual match play.
USC's Anastasiu took #81 Cline in the third-seeded match 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the win for USC. The loss broke Cline's nine-match singles win streak. Cline, ranked 81st in Tuesday's poll, is now 10-2 in dual match play.
At the No. 1 match, #23 Magnani defeated #16 Mojzis 6-4, 6-0. Mojzis goes to 8-5. In the No. 4 match, Matias of USC defeated Collins of UNC 6-2, 6-4. Collins goes to 7-5.
The Tar Heels will play #26 Pepperdine on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. P.S.T. in Malibu, Calif. The Tar Heels' next home match will be on March 15, against reigning national champion #3 Florida at 2:30 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
