No. 5 Tar Heels Take 4-3 Win Over No. 26 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill women's tennis team defeated No. 26 Pepperdine 4-3 Thursday afternoon at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Tar Heels improve to 13-2 on the season and will return home for a March 15 matchup with the third-ranked Florida Gators. With the loss, the Pepperdine Waves drop to 8-4.
North Carolina took the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. The #29 tandem of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis took over the Waves' Caroline Raba and Charlotte Vernaz, 8-4, at the No. 1 doubles position. At the No. 2 seed, Caitlin Collins and Kendrick Bunn captured an 8-6 victory, defeating the Waves' Natalie Braverman and Merve Asimgil. Pepperdine's Karin Schlapbach and Eva Dickes won Pepperdine's only doubles match with a 8-4 victory over Lee Bairos and Jenna Long.
In singles play, the two teams split the singles matches 3-3. The Tar Heels took victories at the No. 2, 3, and 4 seeds.
Coming off a big win over Southern California's #89 Carine Vermeulen on Tuesday, Bairos had another huge victory Thursday defeating Pepperdine's Raba at the No. 2 seed 7-6(4), 6-3. At the No. 3 seed, #81 Cline cruised past #96 Vernaz, 6-0, 6-4.
At the No. 4 seed, Collins came from behind to win a decisive three-set match, beating Pepperdine's Asimgil, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Tar Heels (13-2, 0-0 ACC) return home to host the Florida Gators on Monday, March 15. The match begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
