CHAPEL HILL - Brooke Dieringer had three goals and Beth Ames and Christina Juras had two goals apiece as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team overcame a sluggish start and defeated Ohio University, 12-8, at Henry Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and UNC led just 7-6 at halftime before opening up a lead with four straight goals to open the second half.
With the win, Carolina improves to 3-1 this season and bounces back from Friday's home loss to Loyola. With Sunday's loss, Ohio falls to 2-1.
Carolina scored the first goal just over a minute into the game when Melissa McCarthy connected on a free position attempt. The Bobcats responded with three goals of their own to take a 3-1 lead 10 minutes into the contest. Back-to-back goals by Allison Higgins and Dieringer tied it up at 3-3 at the midway point of the first half.
The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the opening period and the Tar Heels led, 7-6, at the break. Seven different UNC players scored in the first half. Lynz Keys led the Bobcats with four goals in the first half.
Carolina started quickly with four goals in the first 7:18 of the second half to take an 11-6 lead it would not relinquish. Dieringer scored two of those goals and Ames scored the other, leading the Bobcats to call a timeout with 23:58 left to play.
The Tar Heels will return to action vs. Connecticut on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium. Following the game with UConn, Carolina will open Atlantic Coast Conference play next Saturday when Duke visits Chapel Hill for a 1 p.m. contest on the Henry Stadium turf.
