
Loyola Stops Tar Heels, 9-5

CHAPEL HILL -- Stephanie Walker had two goals and one assist as fourth-ranked Loyola defeated No. 13 North Carolina, 9-5, in college women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon from Henry Stadium. The Greyhounds (3-0) raced out to a 6-0 lead and held off a second-half rally by the Tar Heels (2-1) to earn the victory.
Beth Ames led Carolina with two goals. Jess Allen, Kelly Renzi and Melissa McCarthy scored one goal apiece for UNC. Walker, Talia Shacklock and Rachel Shuck each had two goals for Loyola.
Loyola jumped out to a quick start, grabbing a 6-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game. Shuck scored two of those goals for the Greyhounds. The Tar Heels responded with goals by Ames and Jess Allen to cut the lead to 6-2 with 13:29 left in the first period. Neither team scored after that point in the first half.
In the second half, the Greyhounds scored two goals in the first five minutes to boost their lead back to six goals at 8-2. Renzi and McCarthy then scored to give the Tar Heels a glimmer of hope at 8-4, but Shacklock responded with a goal to put Loyola back up 9-4 and end the UNC momentum. Ames scored a late goal for the Tar Heels.
Kim Lawton played very well in goal for Loyola, recording 17 saves and holding the Tar Heels to just 2 of 11 on free position shots.
Loyola enjoyed an 11-5 edge in draw controls in the game.
The Tar Heels will return to action vs. Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium.
