NORFOLK, Va. - The North Carolina field hockey team wrapped up its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 win at No. 7 Old Dominion. Kelsey Keeran, Karen Mann and Laura Douglas scored for the Tar Heels, who lost the shutout when the Lady Monarchs notched their only goal with seconds remaining in the game.
The game will air tape-delayed on CSTV Thursday at 8 p.m.
Second-ranked Carolina is 18-1 heading into the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, in which the Tar Heels are the top seed. Play begins Thursday at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. and UNC will see its first action on Friday. "I'm proud of the team for closing out the regular season with a tremendous record against a very difficult schedule," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "To be 18-1 against the schedule we play is significant. We use the season to prepare for the postseason and we're anxious to get started."
Keeran, a senior forward, scored for UNC just four minutes into the game. Mann, a junior forward, added another first-half goal to put Carolina up 2-0 at the break. In the second half, Mann scored again on a pass from sophomore Ashley Judge to put the Tar Heels up 3-0 before senior Laura Douglas converted a penalty stroke for UNC's final goal.
Old Dominion's Rosanna Delutis scored with six seconds on the clock to give the Lady Monarchs their only goal of the game.
The win was UNC's second of the season over ODU. The Tar Heels won 1-0 on Sept. 18 in Chapel Hill.
