CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Second-ranked North Carolina jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead and held on to the advantage to defeat host Virginia 2-1 in field hockey action Sunday afternoon at University Hall Turf Field. The Tar Heels are now 16-1, while No. 16 Virginia fell to 10-7. The game did not count toward the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, in which UNC is 3-0 and Virginia is 0-2.
Carolina senior Kelsey Keeran opened the scoring with 19:21 to play in the first half with her second goal of the weekend. Keeran, who now has 16 goals on the season, intercepted a Cavalier free hit and shot the ball past Virginia goalkeeper Logan Carr.
Naomi Weatherald put back a save to give UNC a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.The Tar Heels held Virginia without a shot in the first half, but the Cavaliers got three in the second half. On the only UVa penalty corner of the game, Erin Hayes put back a save by UNC goalkeeper Marie Bounds to end the shutout and put the final tally at 2-1.
For the game, UNC had 17 shots to Virginia's three and eight corners to Virginia's one.
The road win was the second of the weekend for UNC, which won 2-0 at James Madison on Saturday.
The Tar Heels return to action next Saturday when they travel to play No. 4 Maryland in their final ACC game of the season. UNC wraps up the regular season with an Oct.30 game at No. 8 Old Dominion.
