COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Senior Yuri Suguiyama swam for the last time in his home state Saturday and won two events to lead the No. 24 North Carolina men's swimming and diving team to a 181-116 victory over Maryland. Meanwhile, the No. 19 Maryland women's team remained undefeated with a 173-127 victory over No. 15 North Carolina, ending the Tar Heels' 13-meet Atlantic Coast Conference winning streak. UNC had not lost an ACC dual meet since being beat 156-144 by Virginia in Chapel Hill during the 2001-02 season.
Suguiyama captured both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events as the Tar Heels improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the ACC. He was Carolina's only winner of two individual events. Other winners for Carolina were Reid Owen in the 200 free, Dan Vick in the 100 breast, Josh Glasco in the 200 fly, Eric Poitras in one-meter diving, Eddy Matkovic in the 100 fly, Jon Fox in three-meter diving and Casey Coble in the 200 IM. UNC also took the 200 medley relay to win 10 of 16 events overall.
The Maryland men fell to 4-7 and 1-4 in the ACC. They were led by Mark Hill and Erik Weinberg who each won two events.
UNC's win clinches the 65th successive year in which Carolina has posted a winning or even dual meet record and the 51st straight year the Tar Heels have done so in the ACC.
Carolina managed only five wins in 16 events in the women's meet but UNC's team depth kept the Tar Heels in the meet until the late stages. Five different Tar Heels posted wins with Jessi Perruquet taking the 200 free, Kelly Weeks the 200 fly, Lizzy Bruce the 200 breast, Lauren Karatanevski one-meter diving and gia Santoro three-meter diving. Bruce's time of 2:15.74 was the top clocking in the 200 breast in the ACC this year.
Maryland remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC. Carolina ended its season at 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC.
The Tar Heel men finish their dual meet season by hosting NC State at Koury Natatorium on Friday at 5 p.m.
