
Tar Heels Topple Terps, 19-15

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior heavyweight Ryan Adams scored a major decision victory in the final bout of the night to lead the North Carolina wrestling team to a 19-15 comeback victory over Maryland Friday at Ritchie Coliseum. The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Tar Heels, who improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. Maryland is now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.
After Maryland won four of the first five matches to take a 12-3 lead, sophomore Garrett Atkinson won at 165 pounds to cut the Terrapin lead to 12-6. Maryland responded with a win at 174 pounds by Patrick Cissne to increase the Terp lead to 15-6.
Junior Mark Canty, classmate Venroy July and Adams then ran off consecutive wins to lift Carolina to the win. Canty won via fall at 2:41 over Dan Scheets at 184 pounds to cut the lead to 15-12, and July took out Jerry Afari at 197 (5-2) to knot the score at 15-15. Canty is now 16-12 and 3-3 in duals this season, while July is 15-12 and 4-2 in duals.
Adams then defeated Barry Stein by a score of 18-7 to give the Tar Heels four points and the 19-15 win. Adams is now a team-best 19-9 this season and 4-2 in dual matches.
Redshirt freshman Bobby Shaw recorded the Tar Heels' other win at 133 pounds. He defeated Mike Lupa, 5-2.
Carolina returns to action Saturday in a tri-meet against both Virginia and Davidson in Charlottesville, Va.
