Carolina Wrestling Splits With Virginia, Davidson

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team rallied from a 24-20 loss to Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia to post a 30-7 victory over Davidson Saturday at the Cavaliers' Memorial Gymnasium. After dropping a hard-fought match to UVa, the Tar Heels won eight of 10 bouts against the Wildcats to improve to 3-5 overall. UNC is now 1-2 in the ACC.
After falling behind 3-0 to Davidson, Carolina ran off five consecutive wins to post a 15-3 lead. Mark Canty (184 pounds) and Ryan Adams (Heavyweight) won via forfeit, and junior Venroy July downed Jayson Powers (5-3) at 197 pounds to lift Carolina the 30-7 victory. Bobby Shaw (133 pounds) and Andrew Slack (149 pounds) each won their second bout of the day versus Davidson.
Against the Cavaliers, freshman Drew Forshey topped Brian Sticca at 125 pounds (5-1) and Shaw won via technical fall over Ryan Stewart (17-1) to give the Tar Heels an 8-0 advantage. Slack's win at 149 gave UNC an 11-6 lead, but Virginia then responded with three straight wins to take an 18-11 advantage. Canty then won at 184 pounds via fall, and Adams won at heavyweight but the Cavaliers held on for the 24-20 victory.
The Tar Heels return to action Saturday, Jan. 31 at UNC Greensboro.
