Tomecka Scores Twice To Lead UNC Past Villanova

ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Senior midfielder Maggie Tomecka scored two goals on headers off Alyssa Ramsey corner kicks to pace the No. 1 University of North Carolina women's soccer team to 3-0 victory over Villanova at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility at the United States Naval Academy.
UNC improved to 11-0 on the season and recorded its ninth shutout, eight of them solo shutouts by sophomore goalkeeper Aly Winget. Carolina has allowed only thee goals all season, one on a penalty kick. Villanova dropped only its second match of the season and is now 9-2.
Carolina got off to a quick 2-0 lead on Tomecka's two goals, both assisted by senior forward Alyssa Ramsey. The first goal came at 9:07 of the match and the second at 17:34. The Tar Heels added an insurance goal at 73:02 as junior forward Anne Morrell fired in a shot to the upper left corner off a corner kick by junior midfielder Anne Felts.
Tomecka now has three goals this season while Morrell's goal was her fourth of the campaign.
UNC outshot the Wildcats 22-5 and had eight corner kicks to four for Villanova. Chrissy Dolan made seven saves for Villanova while Winget had one save in goal for Carolina.
UNC will open its Atlantic Coast Conference season Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. game at Duke. The match will be worth one point in the 2003-04 Carlyle Cup standings. The Carlyle Cup goes to the all-sports champion between the two schools. UNC leads 1-0 after its men's soccer win last week.
