
Carolina Falls to NC State in Shootout at ACC Tourney

CARY, N.C. - After playing 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, North Carolina (12-3-4) was edged by NC State (9-7-2), 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship at SAS Stadium. With the victory, the Wolfpack advances to face No. 1 seed Maryland Friday at 5:30 p.m.
After NC State's Aaron King hit the post with the first penalty kick, the Tar Heels nailed consecutive chances from ACC Rookie of the Year Jamie Watson and junior Andrew Rhea to take a 2-1 lead after the first two rounds. Following a Wolfpack score, NCSU goalkeeper Jorge Gonzalez made a save on the Tar Heels' Michael Harrington to keep the shootout tied at two after three rounds.
oth the Wolfpack and Tar Heels made their fourth-round shots, with Marcus Storey coming through for Carolina. After NC State's Bryant Salter found the back of the net in round five, Gonzalez made a stop on the Tar Heels' Ray Fumo to lift the Wolfpack to the win. Officially the match is recorded as tie for both teams. UNC and NCSU played to a 1-1 draw Oct. 19.
The Tar Heels controlled play for much of the match, outshooting the Wolfpack, 15-10, and holding the edge in corner kicks, 12-3, but were not able to put one in the net in regulation or in the two overtime periods. With the contest tied 0-0, the teams went to penalty kicks to decide the match. The shootout was the first for the Tar Heels since the 1992 ACC Tournament. UNC and Wake Forest were tied 3-3, and the Tar Heels won the shootout, 4-1.
In goal, Justin Hughes made six saves for Carolina, while Gonzalez recorded seven stops for State.
The Tar Heels now await their NCAA Tournament fate as the field of 48 teams is announced Monday, Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. on ESPNews. Carolina hopes to earn a bid for the fifth consecutive season.
