No. 1 North Carolina Clinches ACC Regular Season Women's Soccer Title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Freshman forward Heather O'Reilly and sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley scored second-half goals Sunday afternoon as the No. 1 North Carolina women's soccer team broke a halftime tie and went on to beat No. 5 Virginia 3-1 Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 1,992 fans at Klockner Stadium. With the victory, the Tar Heels clinched first place in the ACC regular season standings for the third straight year and earned the top seed in the 2003 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament which begins November 5 in Cary, N.C.
The win also maintained the Tar Heels' distinction as the only unbeaten and untied team in Division I women's college soccer. UNC is 17-0 on the campaign and 6-0 in the ACC. Virginia fell to 12-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the ACC despite being only the fifth opponent to score against Carolina this season. Carolina got on the board in the 23rd minute as sophomore midfielder Lori Chalupny scored her eighth goal of the season but her first since she tallied the game-winning goal against Richmond on September 21. Chalupny one-timed a cross from Tarpley past Virginia goalkeeper Anne Abernethy, who finished the day with three saves. O'Reilly also assisted on the goal.
ut UNC could not hold the lead for long as Virginia midfielder Sarah Huffman stole a pass and blasted a shot from 18 yards out for her second goal of the season at the 25:21 mark.
The match remained tied for more than 37 minute before freshman sensation O'Reilly, who has played this season while recovering from a broken leg suffered while playing with the U.S. National Team in June, scored her first-game winning goal as a Tar Heel and her fifth of the season overall. O'Reilly tapped in a cross from sophomore midfielder Kacey White in the 63rd minute. Also assisting was junior forward Anne Morrell.
Tarpley provided the Tar Heels with an insurance goal at 69:08, notching her 18th of the campaign on a breakaway after taking a pass from Chalupny.
UNC had an 11-4 edge in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the match.
Carolina will complete its regular season schedule this coming Friday as the Tar Heels host a Halloween night match against Florida State at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Seminoles come into the match as the second place team in the conference with a 4-1-1 league ledger. The gates will open at 6 p.m.
