CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina junior Mary McDowell scored her third goal of the season and second game-winning goal of the campaign in the 67th minute Friday night as the No. 1 Tar Heel women's soccer team finished the regular season unbeaten and untied with a 1-0 victory over No. 9 Florida State at Fetzer Field.
In a game in which UNC outshot the Seminoles 23-4, the shining star was Florida State goalkeeper Joy McKenzie who made eight saves as well as a host of other nice plays in the penalty area that kept the Tar Heels (18-0-0, ACC 7-0-0) off the scoreboard well into the second half.
ut eventually the Tar Heels broke through against the Seminoles (11-6-1, ACC 4-2-1) on a restart. Senior defender Catherine Reddick served a long ball into the penalty area that both UNC sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley and McKenzie went for. The ball appeared to go off Tarpley and fall at the feet of McDowell who took her time and slotted the ball into the empty net amid a host of players.
Carolina had several other nice scoring chances, particularly on corner kicks, but the Tar Heels were unable to score any more against McKenzie and the Seminoles. Reddick hit the crossbar in the first half off an Alyssa Ramsey corner kick and Ramsey's corner kick also hit the crossbar in the second half. UNC had 14 corner kicks on the night to one for FSU.
Carolina's Aly Winget faced four Seminole shots on the night and made three saves.
Carolina will be the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament which begins next Wednesday at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C. The Seminoles have clinched their highest finish ever in ACC play as they can finish no worse than tied for second. A Virginia tie or loss against Clemson on Saturday would give FSU second place on its own and the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament.
