CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Lindsay Tarpley scored four goals, the most by a Tar Heel player in a game in eight years, as top-ranked Carolina beat Wake Forest 6-0 in women's soccer action at rain-soaked Fetzer Field Tuesday night. UNC senior defender Catherine Reddick, who returned to campus Sunday after her two-month long stint with the U.S. Women's World Cup Team. saw her first action of the season and celebrated by scoring a goal in the last minute of the first half.
Tarpley, a sophomore forward from Kalamazoo, Mich., has scored 10 goals in UNC's four ACC matches and has 17 for the season. It was the fourth time in her career she has scored three or more goals in a game, the third time this season. The last player to score more goals in a game was Debbie Keller who scored five goals in UNC's 8-0 win over NC State on September 11, 1995 at Fetzer Field.
UNC, the consensus No. 1 team in the nation, improved to 15-0 on the campaign and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wake Forest, ranked as high as No. 11 in the four nationalpolls, fell to 9-3-2 and 0-2-1 in the ACC.
Tarpley got UNC on the board in the fourth minute as she chipped the ball over Wake Forest goalkeeper Kenna Healey into an open goal. Heather O'Reilly started the play for UNC by feeding Alyssa Ramsey down the left side and Ramsey's cross was headed in nicely by Tarpley. In the 34th minute Carolina made it to 2-0. After a Demon Deacon foul, Reddick served a ball into the box where Maggie Tomecka's header was saved off the goal line by a Wake Forest defender. But Anne Morrell was there to pounce on the rebound for her fifth goal of the season.
Just before halftime Reddick took matters into her own hands as she gained possession about 30 yards out, dribbled in and blasted a shot from the top of the box into the lower left corner.
UNC started strong again in the second half. In the third minute of the period Alyssa Ramsey's corner kick went to Jordan Walker on the far side of the penalty area. Walker's shot was deflected into the goal by Tarpley despite the outstanding effort of Healey who did everything she could to keep it out of the goal. Tarpley then finished up the scoring with two goals in a span of just 1:18 later in the second half.
Tarpleys' header off a touch pass by Anne Morrell made it 5-0 at 63:42. Kacey White also assisted on the goal. Then exactly at 65 minutes Tarpley scored the final goal of the game as she finished to the lower right after taking a through ball by Tomecka.
Carolina outshot the Demon Deacons 27-9. Wake had several good chances to score in the match but Aly Winget and Elizabeth Lancaster combined for three saves for the Tar Heels. Healey finished with six saves for the Demon Deacons.
Carolina will return to action with a match against the Clemson Tigers this Friday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
