CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team defeated William & Mary 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium to improve to 6-3 on the season. The No. 7 Tar Heels got goals from sophomores Laura Douglas and Katy Potter to overcome a 1-0 deficit and earn the win.
The William & Mary Tribe got on the scoreboard first, in the seventh minute of play, on a goal by senior Ann Ekberg, assisted by senior Kristen Southerland. UNC answered 10 minutes later, when Douglas scored an unassisted goal from the field. Carolina got the game-winner in the 31st minute of play when Potter tipped in a shot by Douglas.
"This was a hard-fought game and a good win for us," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We have a lot of respect for William & Mary and I'm proud of our team for coming from behind."
With the victory, UNC holds a 18-3-2 lead in the series against William & Mary, 18-0-2 under Shelton.
North Carolina returns to action Sunday with an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against No. 3 Wake Forest. The Tar Heels head into the 1 p.m. home game with a 1-0 ACC record. Wake Forest is 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC following a 3-0 win over Duke on Friday.
"We know Wake Forest is a very strong, solid at every position," Shelton said. "It's going to take a great team effort for us to stay in the game."
