Women's Lacrosse Wins at UMass, 14-6

AMHERST, Mass. - Kellie Thompson led all scorers with five goals and two assists as the University of North Carolina defeated the University of Massachusetts, 14-6, in women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. The Tar Heels improve to 14-2 on the season, while the Minutewomen fall to 8-7.
Carolina scored eight straight goals to open the game and take an early 8-0 lead. Massachusetts responded at the 6:59 minute mark with an unassisted goal from junior Lydia Robinson. Robinson scored again less than 30 seconds later to cut the Tar Heel lead to 8-2.
Lindsay Stone and Kellie Thompson each scored three goals for North Carolina in the first half, giving the Tar Heels a 10-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
Thompson scored on a feed from Stone at the 23:59 mark to extend the lead to 11-2. The Minutewomen got on the board midway through the second half with a free position goal from junior Kelli Kurtz at 14:16. Massachusetts cut the North Carolina lead to 11-4 on a goal from junior Leslie Pollock at 13:13. Junior Jada Emery was credited with the assist.
Pollock scored her second goal of the game at the 5:09 mark to make the score 13-5. Emery tallied her 24th goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining in the game. She now leads the Minutewomen in scoring with 34 points on the season.
Thompson finished with five goals and two assists to lead all scorers, while Stone tallied three goals and an assist in the victory. Pollock and Robinson each had two goal for UMass, while Emery tallied a goal and an assist.
UMass junior goaltender Cyndi Doyle made 16 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while Carolina goaltender Katelyn Hoffman made three saves in the victory.
The Tar Heels will play their final game of the 2002 regular season on Sunday afternoon at Dartmouth.
