HANOVER, N.H. -- North Carolina's Kellie Thompson scored three goals as the No. 3 Tar Heels defeated No. 13 Dartmouth, 11-6, in women's lacrosse action on Sunday. The win was the 10th in a row for Carolina, which won its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship last weekend.
The game was played in blustery, cold conditions that brought rain and snow flurries to Scully-Fahey Field, and UNC was up to the task, scoring the first five goals of the game in a span of 6:02.
After a Dartmouth timeout, Katieanne Christian and Kate Cole netted goals for the Big Green, but UNC's Lindsay Stone scored her second of the afternoon with 1:42 on the clock, giving the Tar Heels a 6-2 halftime lead.
UNC's Thompson and Dartmouth's Alison Moulin traded goals to start the second half, but the Tar Heels scored the next four for an 11-3 advantage with 18:41 to play.
For the Tar Heels, Christine McPike had two goals and one assist while Brooke Young had a goal and two assists.
In the nets, Dartmouth's Sarah Hughes had 12 saves, while Katelyn Hoffman made eight for the Tar Heels.
Moulin had two goals for the Big Green and Jen Newitt had two assists. Dartmouth has one regular season game remaining. The Big Green travels to Syracuse on Saturday, May 4 for a 12 noon contest.
Carolina lost only two games during the regular season, falling to Loyola and Virginia, and now awaits the announcement of the NCAA tournament field scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 5.
