CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sixth-ranked Loyola College got three goals each from senior attacker Stacey Morlang and senior attacker Kristin Warnock led the Greyhounds to a 10-9 victory over third-ranked North Carolina at Fetzer Field.
Loyola got great play from senior Tricia Dabrowski, senior goalkeeper, who had 13 saves while allowing only nine goals. Dabrowski, the 2001 second-team All-America goalkeeper, also had four ground balls in the game. The Greyhounds also effectively killed the clock with their passing game in the final 15 minutes after taking a three-goal lead at 10-7 on a tally by Warlock. The Greyhounds dominated the last 15 minutes without scoring as they were able to hold the ball on offense for over 12 minutes of time.
Carolina never led in the game but almost caught the Greyhounds at the end with a rally led by senior midfielder Lindsey Stone who had five goals.
Loyola jumped out to a three-goal and was never headed in the game although the Tar Heels did tie the contest once at 3-3 with less than 10 minutes left in the first half. Loyola then ran off three goals in a row to lead 6-3 shortly before halftime. Morlang, a 2001 first-team All-America, had two goals in the first half and four other Greyhounds scored one each. Kellie Thompson had two goals for UNC in the first half of play and Christine McPike*s goal in the last seconds of the half pulled Carolina within two goals.
Three times in the second half Loyola stretched its lead to three goals and Carolina could never quite catch up. Morlang added her third goal in the second 30 minutes and Warnock had two of her three goals after halftime. Carolina got within 7-6 on a goal by Stone in the fourth minute of the second half but Loyola scored twice to bump the lead to 9-6. UNC cut the lead to 9-7 on a goal by Stone but Warnock scored with 14:03 left in the game and late goals by Brooke Young and Stone were not enough to gain the equalizer.
Loyola (2-0) plays fourth-ranked Princeton (1-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Curley Field. North Carolina (3-1) hosts Boston University Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels are looking to avenge losses to the Terriers each of the last two seasons.
