CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kellie Thompson scored five goals and Lindsay Stone had four goals and three assists as the third-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Boston University, 17-10, on Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium. Christine McPike and Erin McInnes each had three goals and one assit for the Tar Heels, who bounced back from Friday night's loss to No. 6 Loyola in Chapel Hill.
The win broke Carolina's two-game losing streak to the Terriers, who defeated the Tar Heels in each of the last two regular seasons on neutral sites. The victory also improved UNC to 4-1 this season. BU fell to 1-1.
Carolina dominated the first half, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of action. Thompson scored three consecutive goals in a span of 1:11 to turn a 3-0 UNC lead into a six-goal cushion. In addition to Thompson's three first-half goals, Stone had three goals and three assists before halftime. Carolina had 17 ground balls in the first half to BU's four.
Ericka Hergenroeder scored two quick goals for BU to start the second half and cut the lead to 10-4. Carolina head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy called a timeout after the second goal and Thompson responded with her fourth and fifth goals of the gameto make it 12-4. The teams traded goals for the remainder of he second half but BU could get no closer than a six-goal deficit.
Hergenroeder scored four goals and had an assist for the Terriers.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host No. 1 Duke at Fetzer Field.
