CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 13th-ranked Tar Heels quickly forgot their early struggles in doubles play and dominated the 75th-ranked Thundering Herd of Marshall without losing a singles set en route to a 6-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
Aniela Mojzis was the first player off the court after easily defeating Joelle Good in flight four, 6-3, 6-0. Kate Pinchbeck, Lee Bairos and Julie Rotondi quickly followed with straight set victories in their respective second, fifth and third flights.
Ashley Kroh took Carolina's Kendall Cline to a tie breaker in the first set, but Cline prevailed and blanked her in the second set for a 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory at flight six. Marlene Mejia was the last player off the court for Carolina as she defeated Jessica Johnson, 6-3, 6-2 in the first flight.
"It was a good win today," Pinchbeck said. "I think we responded well after a tough doubles match."
The Tar Heels didn't start the day in doubles quite so hot. They couldn't overcome a slow start and lost the doubles point two matches to one. Cline and Mojzis scored the lone doubles victory, 8-3 over Lille Nzudie and Meghan Skalsky in flight three, while Mejia and Bairos lost a tie breaker, 9-8 (5) in flight two and Pinchbeck and Rotondi lost at flight one, 9-7.
"Marshall has strong and smart doubles teams," Carolina Head Coach Jen Callen said. "But, our girls didn't let the doubles point get them down."
The Tar Heels have some time off to prepare for a tournament in Tempe, Ariz. that will start next week. Their next match is against Marquette on March 11 in Tempe. They will face Arizona State on March 13 and Purdue on March 15, also in Tempe.
