
Carolina Finishes 15th At Midlands Wrestling Tournament

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team finished 15th at the annual Midlands in Evanston, Ill. Sophomore Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) advanced to the quarterfinals at 125 pounds before falling to fifth seeded Kyle Ott (Illinois), 5-1. Rodrigues finished the tournament in sixth place after defeating Iowa State's Jessee Sundell (F 2:54). Iowa finished first scoring 129.5 points, while the Heels scored 36.5 points.
Freshman Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.) lost to ninth seeded Cal Ferry (Illinois) 5-1 in the fourth round of the consolation round at 141 pounds. Senior Jimmy O'Connor (Woodbine, Md.) advanced to the fourth round at 165 pounds before falling to Michigan's Pat Owen (F 2:24).
Sophomore Mark Canty (Gahanna, Ohio) scored victories over Sem Seretz (Air Force), pinfall 3:22, and Ken Cook (Iowa State), 6-4, in the consolation bracket (174 pounds). Canty dropped his sixth round match to No. 9 Matt Erwin (VMI), pinfall 3:43. Freshman David Dashiell (Chesapeake, Va.) made it to the fifth round of the consolation bracket (197 pounds) with a victory over Millersville's Adam Schaaf, 6-5. Dashiell fell to Paul Bradley (Iowa) in the fifth round of the consolation bracket, 5-2.
North Carolina will participate in the Virginia Duals, Jan. 11-12, after the New Year. The wrestling tournament will be held in Hampton, Va.
