Carolina Splits In Day One At Virginia Duals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team completed day one of competition at the Virginia Duals with a 1-1 record. The fourth-ranked Fighting Illini defeated the Tar Heels 22-12 in the morning session and UNC returned the favor to Army 21-12. Against Illinois, junior Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.) pinned Illinois' Curby and sophomore Dustin Heist (Meadville, Pa.) defeated No. 15 Jason Potter 5-3.
Sophomore Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) fell to No. 17 Kyle Ott, 3-0, and sophomore Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) dropped his match to No. 13 Mark Jayne, 3-2 at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
Top ranked Matt Lackey defeated UNC's Jimmy O'Connor 7-2 at 165 pounds while sophomore Mark Canty (Gahanna, Ohio) fell to No. 5 Brian Glynn, 6-2 at 174 pounds.
In the second match against Army, Rodrigues, Sola, O'Connor, Canty, Heist and freshman David Dashiell (Chesapeake, Va.) all picked up victories. Rodrigues (125) defeated Jon Anderson 14-2 MD, while teammates Heist (184) and Dashiell (197) picked up major decision's as well, 13-4 and 15-6 over Matt Bernard and Todd Wisman.
Sola (133) downed Patrick Simpson 5-2, O'Connor (165) defeated Kurt Pryor 6-4 and Canty (174) bounced Luke Calvert 7-4.
Carolina will wrestle Rider at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 in Hamtpon, Va.
