NORFOLK, Va. - The North Carolina field hockey team fell to top-ranked Old Dominion Saturday 3-2 after two overtime periods and penalty strokes. With the loss, No. 8 UNC is 9-9 on the season. ODU is now 7-3.
After neither team scored in the first half, the Lady Monarchs got on the board in the 50th minute of play on a penalty corner goal by Lotte Bant, assisted by Tiffany Snow. UNC tied the score 23 seconds later on a goal by senior Stephanie Fuller, assisted by sophomore Laura Douglas. The Tar Heels took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute when Douglas scored on an assist by senior Meredith Keller, but Old Dominion tied the score less than a minute later on a goal by Tara Herrmann.
In the first overtime, Old Dominion had five shots and two corners, while UNC had one shot. In the second overtime, ODU got off one shot on two corners while UNC had three shots on two corners. After neither team was able to score, the game went to penalty strokes, with each team taking five. Carolina scored on its first two, as did Old Dominion. But the Lady Monarchs also scored on their fifth stroke to claim the win.
The game was UNC's fifth of the season to go into extra periods, the most since 1993, when the Tar Heels played eight overtime games. Three of this season's games have stretched into a second overtime and two have needed penalty strokes to decide. On Oct. 6, UNC fell to Kent State 2-1 after penalty strokes.
"This was a great game, one of those typical ODU-North Carolina matches," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Both teams put all they had into the game. Unfortunately, we came out a little short, but we can't dwell on it because we've got to turn around and play Princeton tomorrow."
The Tar Heels take on No. 14 Princeton Sunday at 2 p.m. at ODU's Foreman Field in Norfolk. After that, Carolina turns its attention to the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament., Nov. 7, 8 and 10 at Duke. UNC is the No. 2 seed in the event and will begin play Friday at 4 p.m. against No. 3 seed Maryland.
