MORAGA, CALIF. - In an evenly played game, second-ranked North Carolina provided the first blemish of the season on top-ranked Stanford's record as the Tar Heels beat the Cardinal 1-0 Friday afternoon in the first game of the 2002 Saint Mary's Fall Women's Soccer Classic at Saint Mary's Stadium.
Carolina improved to 9-0-2 on the season while the Cardinal fell to 8-1-0. The difference in the game came from junior striker Alyssa Ramsey who provided the only score of the game in the 60th minute of play. Ramsey took a pass from freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley and hooked a shot to the right of Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. One of the best goalkeepers in the nation, Barnhart entered the match with a sterling 0.26 goals against average. It was Ramsey's ninth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with Tarpley. Tarpley recorded her fifth assist. She leads UNC with 23 points while Ramsey is right behind with 22.
The Cardinal took 12 shots in the game to 11 for the Tar Heels. But Carolina had more chances on goal with seven shots to four for Stanford. The Cardinal had eight corner kicks to three for UNC.
The goalkeepers on both sides of the pitch both played well. UNC starter Aly Winget, a freshman, improved her record to 7-0-1 on the season, playing over 79 minutes and making three saves. Senior Jenni Branam saw her first action in goal since UNC's 5-1 win over Washington on September 8 as she came on in relief for 10:32 and made one save. Barnhart made six saves in goal for the Cardinal and allowed only Stanford's third goal of the season. The only teams to score on Stanford this season had been Saint Mary's and Montana.
North Carolina has now recorded six shutouts in 11 matches. After allowing six goals in the first seven matches of the season, the Tar Heels have now recorded four successive shutouts.
Carolina played the match minus two starters. First-team All-America defender Catherine Reddick is currently playing with the U.S National Team at the 2002 U.S. Nike Cup. The National Team plays Italy Sunday in Cary, N.C. Midfielder Kacey White missed her fourth straight game with a torn meniscus.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday as they play the host Saint Mary's Gaels in the Saint Mary's Fall Women's Soccer Classic at 5:30 p.m. EDT at Saint Mary's Stadium. The Gaels were 4-5-1 heading into today's match with Tulane.
