CLEMSON, S.C. - It has not been an easy week for the North Carolina Tar Heels, the nation's #1-ranked college women's soccer team. After outshooting NC State 45-10 on the road Thursday night but losing 2-1, the Tar Heels had to play into the second overtime Saturday night at Riggs Field to defeat the 19th-ranked Clemson Tigers 2-1.
Freshman midfielder Lori Chalupny scored the Tar Heels' game-winning goal at 106:51, just 3:09 before the game would have officially gone down as a tie. Senior forward Susan Bush had the assist on the game winner. The Tar Heels, who with the loss to NC State Thursday night, started an ACC season with a loss for the first time in history, came dangerously close to starting the ACC winless in the first two games, but Chalupny's golden goal lifted the Tar Heels to 11-1-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. Clemson fell to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
"When you win a game like that you have to have a little luck," said North Carolina Head Coach Anson Dorrance. "I give Clemson a lot of credit, they took it to us in the first half. Clemson took us apart in the first half. I am proud of my team for finding that something extra and finding a way to win. We had a tough matach last Thursday with N.C. State. I told my team at the half not to walk away without trying. They really tried in the second half and in the overtime periods and came away with the win."
"I am proud of our team in the way they played in the first half," said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. "In the second half and in the overtime we played too conservative and North Carolina picked up the momentum. Overall I am proud in the way we played. We will probably see North Carolina again in the ACC or NCAA Tournaments. I thought we were mentally prepared to play this match and we played them straight up. Arrington proved why she is one of the best forwards in the country. I thought our people in the back, Sarah Turner, Kate Clifton, and Kristen Allen played really well. It was tough to get behind them tonight. Lauren Heos continues to do a great job in goal for us."
Clemson dominated North Carolina in the first half, outshooting the Tar Heels 9-5 and gaining a 1-0 lead at the half. It was the fourth time this season the Tar Heels trailed at halftime. Clemson scored first at the 39:34 mark. Lydia Vanderbergh sent a pass to Rachel Gallegos from the center to the left side. Gallegos lifted a pass to Deliah Arrington who scored from six yards out near the right post. It was Arrington's ninth goal of the season.
ut after haltime, the Tar Heels took the game over. Clemson took only one shot in the second half and the nearly 17 minutes of overtime while the Tar Heels launched 12 shots in the same time frame.
North Carolina scored early in the second half at 50:54. Maggie Tomecka took a short clearance by the Clemson defense and scored an unassisted goal from 22 yards out. It was her second goal this year.
In the second overtime period Susan Bush drove down the right side and crossed the ball from outside the box. Chalupny scored her third goal of the season from eight yards out to end the match and claim the victory.
It doesn't get any easier for the Tar Heels on Tuesday as Carolina plays its 11th successive game on the road at nationally-ranked Florida State at 7 p.m.
