CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Kellie Thompson led North Carolina with five goals and two assists as the No. 7-ranked Tar Heels cruised past Virginia Tech, 20-1, on Tuesday afternoon in women's lacrosse action from Fetzer Field.
The 19-goal margin of victory equalled the largest in school history. On Apr. 16, 1996, the Tar Heels defeated Davidson, 21-2. Carolina's 20 goals are the most it has scored in a game since scoring 22 against Virginia Tech on March 25, 1998.
Amy Havrilla tallied three goals and an assists for Carolina. Havrilla, who had five goals and one assist in last Saturday's win over Virginia, now has eight goals and two assists in her last two games. Betsy Gaines had three goals and an assist for UNC, and Erin McInnes added three goals as well.
With the victory, he Tar Heels improved to 5-3 on the season. Virginia Tech falls to 2-4.
The Tar Heels scored four goals in the final minute of the first half to give UNC a 9-1 lead at halftime and break open the game. Havrilla scored two of those goals, with Christine McPike and Nicole Foran adding single goals in the final minute of the opening period. Havrilla had three goals in the first half, while Thompson had two.
Carolina outscored the Hokies, 11-0, after halftime. The Tar Heels dominated control of the ball, leading 37-6 in shots and 32-6 in ground balls. Lisa Tsimbidis scored Virginia Tech's only goal.
Melissa Coyne played the first half in goal for Carolina, recording three saves. Freshman goalie Katelyn Hoffman entered the game at halftime and did not allow a goal, tallying seven saves.
Carolina returns to action this weekend when it plays Ohio State and Penn State on Friday and Sunday, respectively, in State College, Pa.
