CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Amy Havrilla scored five goals, including two in the final three minutes of the game, as the No. 8-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated No. 9 Virginia, 15-12, on Saturday aftenoon at Henry Stadium. Havrilla also added an assist for six total points in the game. Christine McPike scored four goals for UNC, while Erin McInnes had two goals and four assists.
With the win, Carolina improves to 4-3 overall this season, 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia falls to 4-4, 0-2 ACC. The victory was Carolina's fifth in a row over Virginia in ACC regular-season play. The Tar Heels lead the overall series, 6-3.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first 5:31 of the game. McPike scored two of those goals, including UNC's third goal in which she stole a Cavalier pass and raced downfield for an unassisted score. Virginia's Lauren Aumiller scored at 23:44 to make it 3-1, but 15 seconds later, Havrilla fed Erin McInnes for a a 4-1 lead that forced UVa into calling a timeout.
Eleven seconds after the timeout, Havrilla scored her second goal of the game for a 5-1 UNC lead. McInnes took a Stone pass and scored at 17:47 for a 6-1 Tar Heel lead, UNC's largest of the first half. The Cavaliers scored three straight goals to cut it to 6-4 and forced the Heels to take a timeout with 14:16 left in the first period. It was 10-7 UNC at the break.
The Cavs scored the first goal of the second half to make it 10-8 as Caitlin Banks scored unassisted. Havrilla and McPike scored back-to-back goals for a 12-8 UNC lead. Virginia's Mills Hook scored two consecutive unassisted goals in a span of 2:33 to cut it to 12-10. The two teams traded goals to make it 13-11 before Havrilla scored her two late goals to ice the victory for Carolina.
Carolina returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
