WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The top-seeded Tar Heels of North Carolina defeated the North Carolina State Wolfpack 1-0 Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Women's Soccer Tournament. The win puts UNC at 17-0 on the season and advances the Tar Heels to the semifinal round of the tournament, where the Carolina will face tournament host Wake Forest on Friday at 8 p.m. The fifth-seeded Demon Deacons and Clemson fought to a 1-1 overtime tie on Thursday but Wake advanced to the semifinals by winning 4-3 in penalty kicks.
Friday's first semifinal game will match will feature second-seeded Virginia against third-seeded Florida State at 5:30 p.m. Virginia advanced by beating Duke 2-1 in overtime while Florida State demolished Maryland 7-2 despite being outshot by the Terrapins 16-11.
Carolina got on the board just over 25 minutes into the match as sophomore midfielder Maggie Tomecka headed in her sixth goal of the season off a corner kick by sophomore defender Catherine Reddick. Reddick earned her seventh assist of the campaign on the goal.
That would prove to be all the offensive fireworks for either team. NC State seldom seriously threatened the UNC goal, and Carolina couldn't find the back of the net again despite several outstanding scoring opportunities. Carolina outshot the Wolfpack 27-2, but NCSU goalkeeper Gretchen Lear registered seven saves to keep NC State in the game.
Despite limiting NC State to only two shots, UNC's defense was suspect throughout the game. There were several miscues and communication breakdowns, but the Tar Heels escaped unscathed with help from senior goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett who controlled the box area and made two saves.
It was only the third time this season that the Tar Heels were held to a one-goal margin of victory in a game. It also happened against Texas and Wake Forest. The one goal was the fewest UNC has scored against NC State since the 1988 ACC Tournament championship game which ended in a 1-1 tie.
