WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- North Carolina, the nation's #1 team, advanced to its 13th successive Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament championship game Friday by defeating host Wake Forest 3-0 at W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium.
The Tar Heels got two goals from sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey in winning its 33rd successive Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament game dating back to 1989. Carolina has won the last 12 ACC Tournament titles in a row. UNC advances to meet third-seeded Florida State in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Spry Soccer Stadium.
Carolina got on the scoreboard first at 24:17 went sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey stole a back pass by a Wake Forest defender, dribbled to the middle of the field and shot the ball to the left of Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan from about 15 yards out. It was Ramsey's team-leading 12th of the season.
The Tar Heels padded the lead at 39:01 as sophomore defender Catherine Reddick scored her third goal of the season assisted by freshman midfielder Mary McDowell, her third assist of the campaign. McDowell gathered the ball in the midfield area and dribbled past a couple of Wake Forest players. She touched the ball back to Reddick who dribbled about eight yards and struck a shot from about 25 yards out that beat Regan to the near post.
At 48:51, Ramsey was fouled in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Ramsey buried the pursuant penalty kick to the left of Regan for a 3-0 lead. It was Ramsey's 13th goal of the season. As a team the Tar Heels are now two out of three on penalty kicks this year. It was the sixth multi-goal game of Ramsey's career and the third this season.
Carolina outshot the Deacons 22-6 and had 10 corner kicks to two for Wake Forest. Florida State earned its first ever trip to the ACC Tournament championship game in Friday night's first semifinal. Despite being outshot by Virginia 36-3, the Seminoles' defense did not crumble and the game ended in a 0-0 tie after four overtime periods of 15 minutes each. Florida State went on to advance to the championship game on penalty kicks by a 3-2 margin with FSU goalie Ali Mims making three saves on the Cavaliers' five penalty kicks. Meanwhile, Virginia goalie Jodi Clugston made one save, allowed three PK goals and one Seminole shot went wide to the left.
