CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer trailed for the first time this season but then scored six unanswered goals to rally past 13th-ranked Virginia 6-1 Thursday night before 1,560 fans at Klockner Stadium.
UNC was led by strikers Alyssa Ramsey and Elizabeth Ball, both sophomores. Each had two goals on the night and Ball added two assists and Ramsey one. Jena Kluegel and Jordan Walker also had goals for the Tar Heels who improved to 14-0 on the season and 6-0 in the ACC. With the win the Tar Heels clinched the top seed for the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament which begins November 8 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Virginia fell to 11-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the ACC.
The victory was Carolina's 23rd in a row over the past two seasons. The Tar Heels have not lost since being beaten 1-0 by Wake Forest on October 27, 2000 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Virginia took the lead at the 14:17 mark of the match as freshman Lindsay Gusick scored with a shot into the left corner of the goal past UNC starter Jenni Branam. It would be Branam's sole mistake of the night. She played nearly 77 minutes in goal and made four saves while allowing the Cavaliers' only goal.
The Cavaliers held the lead for nearly 15 minutes before Tar Heel super sub Elizabeth Ball came off the bench to tie the game. Ball scored at 29:03 on a corner kick play, assisted by sophomore defender Catherine Reddick. The goal was Ball's seventh of the year, all as a reserve. Reddick recorded her sixth assist.
The game remained tied for over 35 minutes before Carolina ran off four goals in a span of 7:06. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Walker scored the game-winner at 65:39 as she tallied an unassisted goal, placing a shot into the left corner. It was Walker's first goal of the year and her first since she scored the game-winning goal in the 2000 NCAA semifinals against Notre Dame.
At 67:08, the Tar Heels extended their lead to 3-1 when Ball scored her second goal of the game, this time on a penalty kick. The Tar Heels continued to blister the Wahoo goal as Alyssa Ramsey scored the first of her two goals (now giving her 11 on the season), taking an assist from Ball and shooting into the left corner at 71:39. Tar Heel senior midfielder Jena Kluegel ended the scoring burst with her sixth goal of the year at 72:45 with assists by Ramsey and Ball.
Carolina ended the scoring in the 90th minute as Ramsey scored an insurance goal with an unassisted tally past Virginia goalie Jodi Clugston after stealing the ball from the Virginia defense.
Kristin DePlatchett relieved Branam in goal for the Tar Heels and played 13 minutes, making one save. Clugston went all the way in goal for the Wahoos, allowing six goals and making two saves.
Carolina outshot Virginia 17-8, including 10-2 in the second half. Both teams had four corner kicks.
The Tar Heels will return home next Thursday for their final regular-season home match, facing NC State at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
