CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - #1 North Carolina played less than a perfect game Thursday night but it was still enough for the Tar Heels to down old rival NC State 4-2 in women's soccer action before 1,142 fans at Fetzer Field.
It was a typically wild game between two teams whose rivalry dates back to 1985 when the Wolfpack began its varsity program. NCSU scored twice against the Tar Heels for the first time in seven years and Carolina trailed in a game for only the second time this season. UNC had two shots hit the crossbar and three more headers off corner kicks saved on the line by NCSU defenders. In the end the Tar Heels prevailed an improved to 15-0 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack lost its fourth straight game and fell to 7-9 overall and 0-7 in the ACC.
The two teams will play again one week from today in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament at Spry Soccer Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Carolina will be the tournament's #1 seed and the Wolfpack will be the #8 seed.
NC State jumped on the board first in the second minute of play. Danielle Borgman played a ball back to UNC goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett but it was struck with such force that DePlatchett could not reach the ball before it went over the end line. The Wolfpack capitalized on the corner kick with Lauren Bendahan launching a corner that was redirected by Erin Bushey for a putaway header by Lindsay Underwood.
Carolina answered the Wolfpack's early strike in the 10th minute on a play which showed senior midfielder Jena Kluegel at her best. Kluegel took a pass from Maggie Tomecka and weaved her way through several NCSU defenders before centering the ball to Anne Remy to scored to the left of State goalie Gretchen Lear from about six yards out.
The Tar Heels took the lead in the 30th minute of play as seniors Borgman and Kluegel combined for a nifty goal. Borgman carried the ball into the deep right corner before sending a perfect cross that Kluegel put away with her head for the lead goal. The Heels scored again before halftime as supersub Elizabeth Ball scored her ninth goal of the season at 37:21. She took a pass from Borgman in the box and redirected it into the goal. Remy also assisted on the play.
The second half saw early scoring before the defenses took over and dominated the final 35 minutes of play. The Tar Heels made the score 4-1 at 50:09 as Tomecka headed in a corner kick by Kluegel. State scored it second goal a little over three minutes later. Kelly Blaggie took a shot that was deflected by a UNC defender to the foot a wide open Annika Schmidt. Schmidt rocket went off the left post and caromed across the goal mouth and into the goal for the score.
oth teams will conclude their regular seasons this weekend with games against Big 10 Conference opponents. UNC travels to Columbus, Ohio to meet the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday night at 7 p.m. NC State hosts Minnesota Sunday at 12 noon at Method Road Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
