Top-Ranked North Carolina Tops Richmond 4-1 in Final Exhibition Tune-up

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The #1-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team played its final tune-up before its regular-season opener at Texas Friday as the Tar Heels defeated a feisty Richmond squad 4-1 Sunday afternoon before 1,325 fans at Fetzer Field. The defending NCAA champion Tar Heels will open their regular season Friday at 8 p.m. EDT when the Heels play the University of Texas at Mike Meyers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
A trio of Tar Heels who each contributed a goal and an assist to the winning effort gave a depleted Tar Heel roster a need lift. Senior midfielder Raven McDonald, sophomore forward Susan Bush and freshman midfielder Maggie Tomecka each produced a goal and an assist for the Tar Heels. In anticipation of the upcoming season-opening trip to play Texas and Texas A&M next weekend, Carolina head coach rested seven players who are nicked up in one way or another, giving them a chance to heal before the real games start Friday. Not dressed for Sunday's match were senior midfielder Laurie Schwoy, junior midfielder Anne Remy, junior midfielder Jena Kluegel, junior defender Danielle Borgman, junior forward Amy Whittier, senior goalkeeper Jamie Kinney and freshman midfielder Carmen Watley. Dorrance also announced on Sunday that sophomore forward Elizabeth Ball will take a non-medical red-shirt year during the 2000 season.
In Sunday's match against the determined Spiders, UNC got on the board quickly with Tomecka scoring off a corner kick play at the 6:39 mark. Bush served the ball into the box to the head of senior defender Kalli Kahmholz. Kamholz flicked the ball onto Tomecka who pushed it into the left side of the net.
The Tar Heels scored their second goal with just 2:26 left in the first half. Bush broke behind the Richmond defense, but the Spiders' Kristen Samuhel saved her initial shot. Bush chased down the ball near the goal line and her second shot caromed off Samuhel and into the goal. The Tar Heels' third goal was equally bizarre as McDonald lofted a cross from the right wing that Samuhel retreated into the Spider goal to gather in but not before the ball had crossed the goal line.
A series of crisp passes led to Carolina's final goal of the day as McDonald started the scoring sequence just across midfield. She led Tomecka who raced up the middle and found freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey unmarked in the box. Ramsey put the ball away easily at the 57:49 mark for UNC's final goal.
The Spiders dented the scoreboard at the 62:59 mark when junior forward Laura Gincel got behind a trio of Tar Heel defenders and scored on a breakaway to the left of diving junior goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett.
