CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey of Cornelius, N.C. sparkled in her North Carolina debut as she figured in all four Tar Heel goals as the #1-ranked Tar Heels defeated Minnesota 4-0 in a women's soccer exhibition game before 1,012 fans at Fetzer Field Friday night.
Ramsey scored the first two goals of the match and then assisted on a pair of insurance goals in the final two minutes of the match as the Tar Heels warmed up for their regular-season opener at Texas next Friday with a solid win over the Golden Gophers of the Big 10 Conference. Ramsey got the Tar Heels on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when her shot from a tough angle on the right wing eluded Minnesota goalkeeper Julie Eibensteiner. Junior defender Danielle Borgman assisted on the goal, the eventual game-winner, when she launched a long pass down the right wing to the streaking Ramsey.
Neither team dented the scoreboard for over 51 minutes after the first goal before the Tar Heels found the back of the net again on a picture perfect series of passes. Junior midfielder Jena Kluegel started the play against her home state Gophers as she slid a past down the right side to sophomore midfielder Susan Bush. Bush centered the ball perfectly and Ramsey ran onto the pass and redirected it with her head into back of the netting.
Carolina clamped down defensively the rest of the way, limiting the Gophers to only four second-half shots, and then the Tar Heels exploded for two goals in the game's waning moments. At 88:32, Borgman started a scoring sequence with a pass that Ramsey ran down virtually on the end line. But Ramsey saved the ball and then found Bush alone in front for an easy put away. Just 32 seconds after the third goal Carolina struck again as Ramsey again centered a perfect ball that red-shirt freshman midfielder Jordan Walker ran on to in the box for a textbook put away.
Carolina outshot the Golden Gophers 22-11 as sophomore starter Jenni Branam and junior Kristin DePlatchett combined on the shutout. Both made three saves on the night. Eibensteiner had eight saves for the Gophers.
UNC will be in action again on Sunday when the Tar Heels host an exhibition match against the Richmond Spiders at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
