Lynchburg, VA--North Carolina used a crucial two run homerun in the fifth inning by Tyrell Godwin to push an offense led by Dan Moylan (3-3, RBI), and Adam Greenberg (2-5, RBI) to a 7-6 win over the Flames of Liberty University at Merritt Hutchinson Stadium on Thursday night. The win moves the Tar Heels to 42-11 on the season, and further stakes their claim to an NCAA tournament bid and possible #1 seed in their regional.
The game was played at the minor league home of the Lynchburg Hillcats to attract a larger crowd, and Liberty fans obliged by turning out the biggest Flame baseball crowd ever. The 1727 in attendance were raucous all night and got a great show as Liberty had the tying run on third base in the ninth inning. Also in the house for this event was Liberty President and Founder Reverend Jerry Falwell, who personally congratulated the Heels as they returned to the team bus following the game.
Senior lefthander Chris Elmore (8-1) picked up the win for Carolina by throwing 6.1 solid innings. Derrick DePriest notched his 12th save of the year after going the final six outs of scoreless ball. DePriest lowered his ERA to 1.33, which would currently rate as the best in the nation, however, those numbers could change by week's end when the NCAA tabulates statistics.
The Tar Heels will now take a week off for final exams before taking on the Florida State Seminoles in the final regular season games of the 2000 season. Game times at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill for the FSU series are Saturday, May 13 at 3:00p.m. and 7:00p.m. Then, the season finale, as well as Senior Day, will be on Sunday May 14, at 1:30p.m.
