HANOVER, N.H. -- Sophomore Kellie Thompson's second goal of the afternoon with 49.8 seconds left in overtime propelled No. 6 North Carolina to a 12-11 road victory over No. 2 Dartmouth on Sunday.
Thompson's gamewinner capped off a wild contest that featured two free position goals in the final seconds of regulation. The Tar Heels broke a 10-10 tie when senior Meghann Mohler scored on a free position shot for an 11-10 lead with 17 seconds on the clock.
ut Dartmouth controlled the draw and had an excellent chance to tie when sophomore Alison Moulin fired a pointblank shot with eight seconds left, but UNC goalie Melissa Coyne made the save, one of 21 for her on the day.
The Big Green forced the overtime when junior Suzy Gibbons connected on a free position opportunity with eight-tenths of a second remaining.
Dartmouth jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first 12 minutes as Amy Frazier scored the Big Green's first two goals of day. With 10 minutes remaining, UNC closed to within one, 5-4, on an Erin McInnes goal. Dartmouth answered with goals by Gibbons and Whitney Jamison for a 7-4 halftime lead.
